A love offering to Miami's Black past, present and future

By Nadege Green

“I created Black Miami-Dade, a history and storytelling platform, to resist the erasure of

Miami's Black past. One of the first things I did was commission Miami artist Chris Friday to

make coloring pages that corresponded with the research on Miami's Black history. For example,

Miami could not become a city without the Black men who signed the city's incorporation papers

in 1896 – 44 percent of the people who signed were Black men. There are no photos of that day

in 1896, but in a coloring page we visualize what these Black men could have looked like as they

made Miami a city.

I am continuing to build out a body of free coloring pages about Miami's Black history

that provides short and impactful moments in local Black history – and that of course invites the

person coloring to envision and remember Miami's Black past with beautiful colors. Through

exhibits, cultural programming and community memory work, Black Miami-Dade is a love

offering to Miami's Black past, present and future.”
