Civic Media: A Space for Exploration
By Sue Ding
“As an emerging field that is still in flux, civic media offers a rare space for creators who are forging new paths and working across boundaries. Civic media practitioners craft new forms, imagine radical futures, and encourage us all to shed old assumptions and paradigms. In this nascent moment, I encourage us to embrace more expansive and malleable definitions, including of civic media itself. I call for a civic media that emphasizes the discursive rather than the didactic, and the messiness of reality rather than the neatness of conventional narrative. And I hope that more support for work that is multidimensional, experimental, and open-ended will lead to more sustainable, inspired, and inspiring futures for us all.”
