Dream, Rest, Play: Reflections on Designing Liberated Spaces for Black Women

By Jenn Roberts

“When Black women have opportunities to be in spaces that are in stark contrast to the oppressive, capitalistic, patriarchal society we are in, creative ideas and connections can naturally emerge from a place of abundance rather than scarcity. The spaces we’re co-creating through The Lab allow women to reimagine their own lives and the role they play in social change through a lens of radical imagination.

Black women deserve spaces, of their design, to practice freedom, to rest, and to dream about our future in community. In the Combahee River Collective Statement, the authors share that the liberation of Black women in turn impacts the liberation of all people; the intersections of our identities would necessitate it. I believe our liberation lies in our ability to have space to radically reimagine our futures. When we make room for Black women to dream, we create the conditions for a radically different future for us all.”
