Care Better: Making Arts & Humanities Software for Actual Humans
By Erik Loyer
“If digital making has taught me anything, it’s that care, for both individuals and communities, is the main source of authentic value in software. Ironically, it’s something I still sometimes have to make a conscious effort to remember, because the digital medium makes it easy to fool myself when it comes to caring. I find that I’m still sometimes seduced by the computer’s ability to make physical the thoughts orbiting in my head. It seems that somehow the same qualities that make pixels on a screen appear to have weight, to be actual instead of virtual, also make it possible for software to appear caring in some ways, while missing the mark in others.”
