“Gaming in many ways is controlled frustration – as opposed to real life, which is uncontrolled frustration. The games we play are a choice: we made a conscious decision in downloading or purchasing something to play and we are rewarded with different options of escape.
But the magic is in the doing. Games provide a consistent set of feedback through the loop that is a measurable accomplishment. And that’s really important when after a massive incident, life starts feeling sticky. One of the most horrible things about trauma is that we end up in many ways stuck in that incident. Many people who experience trauma also experience deep depression and grief.”
